Weird Sun Sighting in Malaysia

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

What started as a normal, quiet Tuesday soon became an interesting one when Malaysians spotted a weird occurrence with the sun, or specifically, around the sun.

By now, many would have spotted the weird sighting, or at least come across a group of people with their smartphones and cameras pointed at the sky. The object of their attention, a suspicious looking circle around the sun, or a halo.

This suspicious sighting is in fact referred to as a “sun dog.” Research will tell you that a sun dog is also known as a phantom sun. It is, according to Wikipedia, an “atmospheric phenomenon that creates bright spots of light in the sky, often on a luminous ring or halo on either side of the sun.”

The sun dog appears when sunlight interacts with ice clouds or particles in the atmosphere. The crystals act as prism, bending the light rays passing through them. Wikipedia also states that the sun dog can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, although they may not always be obvious. It is best seen when the sun is low.

Have you seen the sun dog today? What do you think of it?
