Our School

The International School of Penang (Uplands) is a not-for-profit, co-educational and non-denominational day and boarding school for students aged between 4 – 18 years old. We aim to provide an exemplar international education in a dynamic multi-cultural environment, encouraging all school members to be active learners and engage with the local and wider community.

Our values are important to us.  As an international community, we uphold the School’s Guiding Statements, nurturing its members to become globally minded citizens.

Respect – Inquiry – Collaboration – Resilience – Balance – Diversity – Integrity

We live our motto,  Respect for Self. Respect for Others.

Our Senior School Programmes

Uplands offers a multi-certification pathway in Year 12 and 13 that provides flexible and personalised pathways for all learners to find success as part of our High School. Students may select to follow the full International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and graduate with an IB Diploma alongside a High School Diploma or they may take some IBDP courses complemented with High School courses and/or self-guided electives. Whatever pathway and courses students choose, they learn together in inclusive classrooms. For more information on our pathways, you can visit the High School Curriculum website.

The IB Diploma Programmes (DP)

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a rigorous, academically challenging, and balanced programme of education designed to prepare students aged 16 to 19 for success at university and life beyond. The curriculum is made up of the DP core and six subject groups: studies in language and literature; language acquisition; individuals and societies; sciences; mathematics; and arts. In addition to the six subjects, the DP core aims to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills through Theory of Knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know; The Extended Essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper; and Creativity, Activity, Service, in which students complete experiences and projects related to those three strands.
