Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Penang food aficionados will be thrill to know that they can now purchase a book featuring a comprehensive insight into the multiracial and multicultural nature of Penang food.

The book, Penang Heritage Food, is written by Dr Ong Jin Teong, and was recently launched at the Tropical Spice Garden Cooking School.

Dr Ong is a retired electrical engineering professor. The book which is based on his experiences with food in Penang relates his memories of food cooked by his grandmother, aunties, uncles, cousins and his late mother.

In his book, Dr Ong highlights Penang’s legendary gastronomical delights such as the Penang Laksa, Char Kway Teow, Hokkien Mee, Nasi Lemak, Roti Jala, Bubur Pulut Hitam, Pengat, Popiah, Ju Hu Char, Heh Chnee, Murtabak and Nasi Kandar among others.

According to Dr Ong, many of the food listed above have gone through modifications over the years. Although some modification is alright, too much of it will make the dish lose its identity.

In his book, readers will be taken on a nostalgic journey of old and forgotten restaurants in Penang, which used to be household names when it came to serving excellent food. Some of these places which he mentions in the book are; Hollywood Restaurant in Tanjung Bungah and Kuan Loke Café around the corner of Loke Thye Kee and more.

The book is priced at RM39.90, and is available at all MPH Bookstores.
