Malaysia Ranks 71st for Economic Freedom

Malaysia has the 71st highest economic freedom, according to the Economic Freedom of the World 2012 annual report by the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs.  Malaysia is ranked at 71 among 144 countries.

The country to top the list is Hong Kong. Other countries included in the rankings are: US (18th), Japan (20th), Germany (31st), France (47th), Italy (83rd), Russia (95th), Brazil (105th), China (107th), and India (111th).

Malaysia has indeed made good progress as it rose to the 71st position from its previous 78th position in 2011.

According to The Sun Daily, this ranking is an important benchmark for Malaysia as it measures the nation’s performance in the year after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Tun Razak announced the New Economic Model (NEM) and the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP)
