Sonamu Alert in East Malaysia

Those living in Sibu, Mukah and Bintulu are advised to stay alert as the tropical depression Sonamu is expected to make its way there tomorrow. It is currently prevailing over the South China Sea.

A report in The Sun Daily says that winds of 60kmph are slowly moving towards Mukah, and as of 12pm yesterday, it was about 400km from Kuching.

The Meteorological Department warned that strong north-easterly winds of 50kmph to 60kmph with waves up to 4.5m are expected to occur over the waters off Kuala Rajang, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri of Sarawak, Labuan, Kudat, the interior and west coast of Sabah and Reef South.

The Sun Daily also wrote that the strong winds and rough seas are expected to continue until Sunday. For the moment, it is not safe to carry out any shipping and coastal activities including fishing and ferry services. Floods are also expected in low-lying areas.
