This post is brought to you by Sri Lankan Airlines

When flying from KL to Europe, Sri Lankan Airlines may not be the obvious choice, but an excellent Business Class product and competitive prices are just two of the reasons why the airline is worth considering. What’s more, a stopover in Sri Lanka makes the journey all the more appealing.

Sri Lankan hospitality is legendary and it is the onboard service that sets this airline’s Business Class apart from many others. Once on board, there is a warm welcome with many small touches throughout the flight that make the experience quite special.

Flying out of KL, the short 3.5-hour flight is operated on an A320-200 with traditional Business Class seating, but as an afternoon flight there is no call for a flatbed and the comfort and space provided by the modern seats in the cabin is excellent. On the long-haul flight, around 11 hours to London for instance, the comfort on the A340-300 is exemplary. In a 2-2-2 configuration, the plush seats, in soft brown leather, recline to a full flatbed of very generous proportions. It should be noted that flatbeds are not yet available on all long-haul flights, but the product is in the final stages of being rolled out across the fleet.

Traditional Sri Lankan food is always featured on the menus along with a good selection of Western dishes and light options. Fresh juices and premium drinks including French and New World wines, a good Champagne, and XO Cognac, are offered on both short- and long-haul flights. Amongst the small touches that make a flight special is the tea service; quite fitting considering the fame of Ceylon tea with a beautiful pewter teapot served to the guest along with fine china. After dinner on a long-haul flight, another special touch is a trolley service with a selection of fresh fruits and cheeses.

In-flight entertainment in the new business class cabins is of the standard to be expected in a modern Business Class seat, with a large screen and full choice on movies, programmes and also games on demand.

For a stopover in Sri Lanka, the possibilities are endless. With time to spare a trip to the historic city of Galle or up to Kandy in the hills and on to the tea plantations are musts. But if time is short, just 12km from the airport is the delightful seaside resort town of Negombo. Seemingly a million miles from the airport there is a magnificent beach and a nearby lagoon and also canals but the small town itself is a delight as is the Jetwing Beach resort. More of a boutique hotel than a resort the 78-room property, as the name suggests, is right on the beach and features a choice of three restaurants, a spa, and extremely comfortable rooms which are available for day rates as well as overnight.

A member of Small Leading Hotels of the World, this charming resort is in itself a worthy destination and a great treat as a handy stopover.
