Mass Rapid Transit Construction Underway

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

As part of the government’s plans to provide a better public transport system and ease traffic congestion, work has begun in earnest on constructing the Mass Transit System (MRT). Many expats will have seen major construction work along many of the roads on the route the rail line will ultimately take from Sungai Buloh to The Curve into KL Sentral and on through the city ending up in Kajang, a total distance of 51 kilometres. There will be a total of 31 stations along the route and it will serve around 1.2 million people. It is expected the trains will carry some 400,000 people day.

Given the increasing traffic congestion along this route, it will be a welcome addition when the line comes fully online in a little over three years. The train will run above the ground until it gets close to the centre of Kuala Lumpur and then it will run underground. It will interconnect with a few other lines along its route. You can find out a lot more about the project, including a video showing the planned route, construction progress reports, and traffic updates, at their website www.mymrt.com.my.
