Tourism Arrivals to Malaysia Continued to Grow in 2012

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Tourism arrivals rose again in 2012, with the total number of arrivals passing 25 million for the first time. This keeps Malaysia in the top ten most-visited countries in the world. As is often pointed out, over half the tourist arrivals come from Singapore. However, this is not so unusual; over half the tourist arrivals in the United States are people crossing their borders with Mexico and Canada.

What is amazing, is that just 15 years ago, the number of tourist arrivals to Malaysia was just under 6 million so there has been a staggering growth in overseas visitors. Indonesians and Chinese are the second- and third-most frequent visitors to Malaysia, both registering strong growth of 12% and 25%, respectively, over the prior year. There is little question that the number of Chinese tourists will continue to show very strong growth as more and more of their citizens start to travel the world.
