A 30 member research team assembled at UNIVERSITI Sains Malaysia's (USM) Centre for Global Archaeological Research (CGAR) has gained considerable international recognition for having produced comprehensive site maps of the 2,000-year-old Gandhara Civilization in Peshawar, Pakistan.

The object of the research project- which lasted from June 4 to July 2 -was to collect data to gain a greater understanding of this complex civilization, which is known for producing exceptional figurines and reliefs (including some disturbingly realistic ‘fasting Buddha’ statuettes which were produced around the 4th century ad) .

Prof Mokhtar Saidin, the director of CGAR and head of the research team, has stated that the magnetic anomaly mapping undertaken at the Kashmir Smast site revealed a great deal of potential for gaining a greater understanding of the Gandhara Civilizations historical importance in the region. A number of ‘adzes’ (stone aged edged tools for smoothing and carving wood) were uncovered at the Kashmir Smast site.

The comprehensive archeological project was initiated as the major program  in the USM-University of Peshawar framework, and the latter university has promised greater research opportunities for USM in the near future.
