The Malaysian Government has pledged to establish a National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC)by the end of the year in an effort to foster beneficial relationships between different ethnic groups. The council will be furnished with the combined knowledge and efforts of the National Unity and Integration Department and the Institute of Ethnic Studies at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced the possibility of the NUCC on June 26 as a possible means to create better social cohesion after the divisive elections held this year.

Tan Sri Joseph Kurup of the Prime Minister’s department has stated that dialogues in Putrajaya, Kuching, Kota Baru and Kota Kinabalu and a workshop
held at Universiti Putra Malaysia had yielded invaluable input that will help make the soon to be established NUCC an effective and practical institution.

Tan Sri Joseph Kurup has stated that the suggestions put forth at the workshop held at the university will be submitted to the government cabinet for official approval.
