Spotify Connect

The music streaming giant Spotify just announced a new product called Spotify Connect.  With Spotify Connect, the music you’re listening to is synced to the cloud (i.e. internet).  This basically results in Spotify centralizing your music activity for all your devices.  Furthermore, Spotify Connect aims to dramatically improve the music experience with your home audio system.

There are several benefits with Spotify Connect. For example, you can do the following:

  • Turn Your iPhone or iPad into a Remote: You can use any of your devices to control where and how the music plays. For example, your iPhone or iPad can become a remote to browse songs and control the music playing from your home audio system.
  • Seamlessly Transition Playback Between Devices: Spotify Connect allows you to seamlessly transition the music you’re listening (i.e. playback) from one device to another.  For example, you could walk into your apartment while listening to a song on your iPhone and then with a click of a button seamlessly transition the song to play from your home audio speakers – without even stopping the song.
  • Conserve Battery Life when Playing from Your Home Audio System:   With Spotify Connect, your music plays from the speakers’ direct internet connection to Spotify and does not play through a connection with your iPhone (or iPad) – again, your iPhone essentially becomes a remote control, and this optimized role will dramatically save your phone’s battery life.
  • Listen to Uninterrupted Music from Your Home Audio System: Since your home audio speakers will play Spotify music directly from Spotify on the internet and not through your mobile device (e.g. iPhone or iPad), you don’t need to worry about a song’s interference from a poor bluetooth connection or an incoming phone call. Again, the reason is that the speakers aren’t playing from those devices.

Spotify is working in collaboration with many of the biggest players in home audio to incorporate the Spotify Connect functionality, such as Argon, Bang & Olufson, Denon, Hama, Marantz, Philips, Pioneer, Revo, Teufel, Yamaha, and more. Compatible audio systems will have the Spotify Connect logo.

Also, Spotify Connect functionality will only be available for those who have Spotify’s Premium version.

According to the Spotify Press Release, Spotify Connect is expected to be released on the iPhone, iPad, and home audio systems “over the coming months”. It will then be released with Android and desktop.
