The annual Merdeka Awards started in 2008. They recognise people who have made an outstanding contribution to the country in the fields of education, environment, health, science, and technology. These awards are open to Malaysians only. However, one award category, called “Outstanding Contribution to the People of Malaysia,” goes specifically to a non-Malaysian who has made an “outstanding and substantial contribution to Malaysia or the people of Malaysia.” The work should have been done in the five-year period preceding the award.
