High-Speed KL/Singapore Train Receives Green Light

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The Prime Ministers of Singapore and Malaysia have agreed that the high-speed rail (HSR) link between the two countries will go ahead. Malaysia has decided to place its station at the current site of its air force base in Sungai Besi, about five kilometres from the Petronas Towers. Singapore, meanwhile, has selected three possible sites. The HSR is planned to have a single border checkpoint and discussions are proceeding as to where that will be located. The completion date is still targeted for 2020, although some people feel this is a rather ambitious goal.

It is estimated the final travel time will be around 90 minutes, which would make travelling by HSR considerably quicker than going by plane, given the advance check-in times required for air travel, not to mention the distance of the KL and Singapore airports to their respective city centres.

At the same time, there are plans to connect Singapore and Johor with a Rapid Transit System which would share the common immigration checkpoint.
