It Is Through Difference That Greatness Is Born

One size cannot fit all. At Hils Learning, we cater to the child who learns differently. We firmly believe that all children are unique – there is no one programme that can meet every individual child’s needs.

Hils Learning, which was founded 11 years ago, started with the passionate belief in the need to provide distinctive, holistic, and personalised support for children who fall between the cracks at school.

We believe that all children learn best when they are happy, engaged, and confident.

But when children learn differently these ingredients are often missing because of their struggle to fit in. How do they navigate their way, often without being able to express how lost, helpless, and lonely they feel?

The information age has brought with it a much-increased attention to ‘disorders’ and ‘conditions’, which describe people who do not fit the ’norm’. Most often, these are applied to children whose brains are wired differently.

Naturally, parents of children who seem outside of the mainstream are anxious — even fearful — that their child will be left behind, without a happy future to look forward to.

At Hils, we understand the agony and frustration that almost every parent goes through if their child learns in a different way.

This is why we assess each child individually to understand the way they learn. Each child at Hils has a programme designed just for them. Our educators teach children the way they learn, and create programmes to facilitate these unique learning styles.

To ensure that children receive a consistent message and approach, Hils also works closely with parents to provide the necessary support. Our view is for parents to maintain their belief in themselves and their children – and consider that their child’s path may be different from those of their peers. Perhaps the greatest delight in this method is that it also brings forth wondrous talent from children who would otherwise have been left aside, burdened with ugly labels and no solutions.

How do we get different learners to love learning? Besides all the steps mentioned above, we believe that enthusiasm must start at the top. The joy of acquiring knowledge must infuse the whole organisation, from administrators to facilitators to the children themselves. This is a core element in the Hils philosophy.

That is why we invest heavily in the training and development of our staff. In addition to weekly mini training sessions, we regularly invite external expertise to broaden every member’s scope of knowledge. These experts have recently included specialists in Dyscalculia, Asperger’s, Nutrition, and Psychology.

An environment that fosters creativity, curiosity and learning is essential to sparkle, innovate and make a difference.

Through her book Small Steps, Big Differences: A Toolkit for Parents of Children Who Fall through the Cracks, Hils Learning founder Hilary Craig aims to give parents strategies to support their different learner.

In it, she implores us to recognise that: “The magic of humans is their differences and these must be preserved, for it is through difference that greatness is born.”
