Newington College

Based in the inner west of Sydney, Australia, just 10 minutes from the city centre, Newington College was founded in 1863 under the Wesleyan Methodist Church. The aim was to establish a school that would provide students with a modern liberal education. Now over 160 years in the making and as a Uniting Church school, the College offers high quality education, boarding capacity, and a diverse co-curricular program to primary and secondary school students.

The Edmund Webb Boarding House is just a five-minute walk from the senior campus and is the home away from home for a close-knit group of 50 students. Boarding staff are all academic staff at the College and live onsite with their own families. Boarding is open to students from Years 9 to 12, with Year 11 and 12 students enjoying a single room, and Year 9 and 10 students provided with a shared room. All rooms have individual bathrooms.

Renowned for helping students develop Great Hearts, Inspired Minds and Strong Wings, Newington College builds firm foundations with rigorous academic, wellbeing and cocurricular opportunities, and a culture that is vibrant, caring, courageous and celebrates diversity and inclusion. Each and every individual student is given the opportunity to thrive, feel seen and heard, and be the best version of themselves.

At the heart of Newington’s philosophy is the belief that education is about more than academics alone. The school offers over 50 co-curricular activities, including Drama, Music (with more than 15 ensembles, orchestras and bands), CineArts, F1 in Schools, Ethics, Debating, Sustainability and Gender Equity. Sports include AFL, rugby, tennis, volleyball, football, basketball and swimming and all students undertake outdoor education in the form of Cadets or the Newington Challenge. Students are not only academically prepared but also emotionally intelligent, resilient and ready to make a positive impact to society.

In 2026, the dynamic, future facing school will also be marking an exciting milestone by welcoming female students to Kindergarten and Year 5 on Preparatory campuses in Lindfield and Stanmore. Enrolment to the Senior campus at Stanmore will begin in Year 7 and Year 11 in 2028. This exciting transition marks the start of Newington College’s journey
to becoming a fully co-educational school by 2033.

Common Sense Media, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of media and technology, has recognized Oasis International School Kuala Lumpur as a Common Sense School.

OIS has demonstrated its commitment to taking a whole-community approach to preparing its students to think critically and use technology responsibly to learn, create, and participate while preparing them for the perils that exist in the online realm, such as plagiarism, loss of privacy, and cyberbullying. With the right support, kids can take ownership of their digital lives, engage with real issues, and change their communities for the better. The recognition acknowledges our school’s commitment to creating a culture of digital citizenship.

Our teachers actively seek opportunities to engage students with the world to share their learning and sharpen their knowledge. By creating an environment for students to share their learning with a global audience, teachers help students to develop skills needed to thrive beyond the classroom.

School Snaps: GEMS Year 7 Trip to Janda Baik

The trip to Janda Baik was quite the experience for me as I have never been to the nature side of the state. We started with bonding games, where everyone did a bunch of fun activities like the earthquake, the suspecting game and many more. After the warm-up, we had a list of activities that included fishing, taking pictures, synchronised dancing, building a bridge, archery, mini-golf, and target shooting. Once our time was up, we calculated the scores obtained for completing the activities. My team achieved the highest score!

Thanks to our teacher, Ms Praveena, who joined our team and encouraged us to aim for first place. Then we were served a hearty lunch and went for insect catching later. Insect catching and identifying was fun yet tiring. Students were all over the retreat running after different species of spiders and butterflies.

Overall, it was a unique experience impossible to be done in the city. The trip was enjoyable, and I couldn’t thank the school and Janda Baik staff enough for planning this trip.

School Snaps: Book Week @ GEMS

After a refreshing and colourful Easter Break, The English Department of GEMS International School began Term3 by celebrating Book Week and Shakespeare’s Birthday. Plenty of exciting activities were held throughout the whole School from Early Years Foundation Stage to Primary School and Secondary School.

“Dress Up Day,” in which kids dressed up as characters from their favourite book or piece of literature, was unquestionably the cherry on top of Shakespeare Week.

Following our successful Swimming Galas, School Camps and Inter-House Sport Competitions, we emerged from our ‘pandemic hibernation’ focused on ensuring a safe, happy and successful learning environment for all. Given the gravity and hardship faced during the pandemic era we were in for the past two years, these aspects of everyday “normal” school life have brightened each student’s smile and sparked happy energy even behind the masks! Community gatherings really do provide crucial bonding time, injects delight and preserves morale for all.

School Snaps: Buzzing School Life at ISKL!

Excitement filled the air at The International School of Kuala Lumpur’s (ISKL) 25-acre campus, which is positively buzzing with student events happening across divisions!

Upbeat tunes celebrating friendship and school life echoed at the Robert B. Gaw Theatre as talented Middle School students performed their hearts out for the production of High School Musical Jr. Although the students had minimal practice leading up to the big day, their talents shone as they graced the stage with familiar numbers such as “Get’cha Head In The Game” and “We’re All In This Together.” Apart from the essential learning experiences, this is a memory that will last a lifetime.

While over in the Elementary School Wing, our young Panthers reached a new milestone as they showcased bravery and courage during ISKL’s pop-up Vaccination Center! With SOPs in place, the vaccinations were carried out smoothly and safely for more than 180 ISKL students aged 5–11. The successful event was a collective effort by our community that garnered a lot of smiles and thumbs-ups, exemplifying the responsible and caring spirit at ISKL.

We are #ISKLproud of our Panthers! Keep up to date with more happenings at ISKL by visiting us at iskl.edu.my.
