A Selangor-based animal shelter that has saved thousands of dogs is now struggling to secure its next food supply — and even small donations could make a critical difference.
Furrykids Safehaven began with a single, urgent act of compassion. In 2017, a small group of volunteers with big hearts stepped in to save 84 dogs that had been placed on a culling list. What started as a modest rescue effort, with little more than a roof and basic supplies, has since grown into one of Malaysia’s largest independent dog shelters.
Today, the shelter cares for more than 2,000 dogs. It is a staggering number, and one that reflects both the scale of the stray animal issue in Malaysia and the commitment of those who refuse to turn away.
Among the dogs are abandoned puppies, ageing strays, and more than 40 animals with disabilities — dogs that would not survive on the streets. For these animals, Furrykids is not simply a temporary refuge. It is home.
THE REALITY OF RUNNING A SHELTER
Operating at this scale unsurprisingly comes with constant and very real challenges. Food, medical care, shelter maintenance, and staffing all require funding, and unlike commercial enterprises, shelters rely almost entirely on public support.
At present, Furrykids Safehaven is facing one of its most urgent moments yet. The shelter has an outstanding bill of RM31,250 owed to its kibble supplier, with just days to settle the amount before further deliveries are halted. Food supplies are already running low, and without immediate support, feeding over 2,000 dogs becomes an impossible task.
It is a stark reminder that while the work of animal rescue is driven by compassion, it is sustained by resources. The costs are ongoing, and they add up quickly.
This is not an isolated situation. Across Malaysia, shelters and rescue groups operate under similar pressure, often balancing limited funds against overwhelming need. Furrykids, given its size, simply feels that pressure on a larger scale.
A CARING COMMUNITY: WHY THIS WORK MATTERS
Animal welfare efforts often operate quietly, but their impact is significant. Shelters like Furrykids do more than provide food and housing. They reduce the number of stray animals on the streets, mitigate potential safety concerns, and offer a humane alternative to culling.
Their work also reflects a broader shift in public attitudes. There is growing awareness that animals, particularly those abandoned or born into difficult circumstances, deserve care and dignity. Supporting shelters is one way individuals can take part in that shift.
Furrykids has also been involved in initiatives such as “Mission Pawsible,” responding to culling measures in certain areas by rescuing and rehoming at-risk dogs. These efforts require coordination, manpower, and, once again, funding.

The immediate need is simple: food. The shelter must clear its outstanding balance to ensure continued supply, and time is short.
