Beloved Malaysian artist and character designer Michael Chuah invites visitors into a whimsical world of ghosts, mythical creatures, and self-discovery with his latest solo exhibition, Yuurei Neko Sama: Uncharted World, now showing at ZHAN Art | Space in Petaling Jaya.
Fans of character art, contemporary pop culture, and imaginative storytelling have a new exhibition to explore this month as acclaimed Malaysian artist Michael Chuah unveils Yuurei Neko Sama: Uncharted World at ZHAN Art | Space.
Running until July 12, the exhibition represents an important milestone in Chuah’s artistic journey, bringing together his well-known character design work and contemporary fine art in a vibrant and highly accessible showcase.
At the heart of the exhibition is Yuurei Neko Sama, Chuah’s much-loved ghost cat character, who embarks on a new adventure alongside a loyal frog companion. Inspired by the gift of a toy ship, the pair venture beyond familiar surroundings and into unexplored waters, encountering an array of colourful new characters and mythical beings along the way.
The exhibition’s narrative draws inspiration from Japanese folklore and the world of yōkai – supernatural spirits, monsters, and mystical creatures that have long featured in Japanese storytelling traditions. Through a series of paintings and collectible artworks, visitors are introduced to an expanding cast of characters that inhabit Chuah’s imaginative universe.
While playful and visually engaging, the exhibition also explores deeper themes. At its core, Uncharted World is a reflection on curiosity, courage, and personal growth. The journey undertaken by Yuurei Neko Sama serves as a metaphor for stepping beyond one’s comfort zone and embracing new experiences, a message that resonates well beyond the gallery walls.
“I am deeply grateful to ZHAN Art | Space for the opportunity to share this body of work,” said Chuah. “This exhibition marks a major milestone in my career, as I have blended my character design with fine art. It offers viewers a first look at some new characters, but the core theme serves as a universal metaphor for personal growth and self-discovery.”
Visitors can also purchase a range of artworks, figurines, and sculptures inspired by the exhibition, with prices ranging from RM650 to RM18,500.
