Optimism Abounds for the Future of Kuala Lumpur’s Traffic

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Goh Bok Yen, traffic expert and consultant, has stated that the implementation of a multi-mode (and mutually supportive) public transportation system could help ease the congestion woes that confront city commuters on a daily basis.

“We need not only a good MRT system, but also (for example) LRT, KTM, bus and taxi services, to complement one another with their respective roles to form a complete multi-model public transportation system.” Goh stated in response to the Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s inquiry about the ways in which congestion could be mitigated.

Despite his optimism, Goh asserted that KL’s response to traffic issues thus far have been too little too late, and that results will take time.

“This is because the traffic problem in Kuala Lumpur has accumulated over the last 20 years. It is only in the last five years that we have given emphasis to the role of public transportation in city development,” Goh said.

In addition to giving his thoughts on improving the flow of traffic, Goh also dismissed some prevailing ideas that flash floods were directly linked to congestion in certain areas, stating instead that the lack of drainage and irrigation efficiency were the principal cause.
