‘Die Fledermaus’ Comes to Penang

‘Die Fledermaus’ (The Revenge of Bat) is one of the most charming of Viennese comic operettas and so tickets are selling well for the one night performance by Co-opera, Australia’s longest serving and busiest touring opera company on 28 September at the Dewan Sri Pinang.

This operetta in three acts was first performed at the Theater an der Wien, Vienna, on 5th April 1874. Die Fledermaus epitomised the Viennese spirit in music at that time. The public was enchanted, even the critics enjoyed it, and after a run of 49 performances in Vienna, it was performed all over Germany, Europe, America and Australia.

Taken out of its original, musty Victorian setting, this production is reset in the fun and fizzy times of the fanciful 1920’s era. The high energy and vivacious young cast members are well suited to brew the mixture of mischief and mayhem that makes the show fun for all.

The Co-opera troupe to Penang will comprise a total of 26 performers including singers and instrumentalists. There will be an additional 10 members from the Penang Philharmonic Orchestra to augment the orchestra. The event is jointly organised by Penang Global Tourism, Penang Philharmonic and Penang Arts Council.

Tickets are priced at RM100 and RM60 for Adults and RM20 for students. Tickets are available at the Tourist Information Centre at the Ground Floor of The Whiteaways Arcade located at Beach Street in George Town and the Dewan Sri Pinang.
