The Perseid meteor shower is expected to occur tonight, August 12, between 8pm and the early hours of August 13.

According to the National Space Agency (Angkasa) research officer Mohd Redzuan Tahar, the Perseid meteor shower occurred from the tail debris of 109P/Swift-Tuttle comet which entered the earth’s atmosphere at a speed of approximately 212,500 km/h.

Mohd Redzuan said the Perseid meteor shower occurred because the earth’s orbit around the Sun crossed the path of the comet Swift-Tutle, resulting in the burning of dust and fine rock fragments left behind by the comet when it entered the earth’s atmosphere.

“It causes these rock fragments to burn and produce long strips of meteors…it has been predicted that as many as 60 meteors can be seen within an hour (during that time),” he was quoted as saying to Bernama.

The Perseid meteor shower can be seen with the naked eye. The name Perseid meteor shower came from the Perseus constellation, which began on July 17 and will end on August 24.

If you do happen to catch the Perseid meteor shower, take a picture and share it on social media with the hashtags #PerseidMeteorShowerMY and #PerseidMY

Several conflicting timing has been put up on the net by those who translate outright pages from other country.

The perseid group of stars, for tonight, only rise in the east at 1am and will be up high by dawn. So the best view is east, and best time 4-7am.
Last night (this morning, actually) was cloudy in KL, clearing slightly towards dawn. Got a few spectacular long big flash with one vertical flash.
Hope this help. Enjoy!
