NEW DIRECT BATIK AIR SERVICE STRENGTHENS SYDNEY–KUALA LUMPUR LINKS

Batik Air has recently launched a new direct Airbus A330 service between Kuala Lumpur and Sydney, expanding its Australian network and providing travellers with a faster alternative to its existing Kuala Lumpur–Sydney route via Bali.
The inaugural arrival in Sydney was marked with a traditional water salute, while airline and tourism representatives from Malaysia and Australia attended a send-off ceremony for the return flight.
The new route reflects growing demand for travel between the two countries across leisure, business, education, and visiting friends and relatives (VFR) segments. Australia has seen continued growth in Malaysian visitor arrivals and tourism spending, while Sydney remains a popular destination for Malaysians seeking education, employment, and tourism opportunities.
The direct service also strengthens Kuala Lumpur’s role as a regional aviation hub, offering convenient onward connections to destinations including Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu, Bali, Bangkok, Tokyo, Shanghai, and New Delhi.
Batik Air CEO Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy said the new service enhances passenger convenience by complementing the airline’s existing Sydney operations while supporting stronger regional connectivity and access to Southeast Asia.
Sydney Airport also welcomed the new route, noting that it expands travel options between Australia and Malaysia, strengthens trade and business links, and increases widebody capacity through one of the region’s key aviation gateways.
The new service further reinforces Batik Air’s growing presence in Australia while supporting tourism, economic cooperation, and closer ties between the two countries.

AIRASIA X PLANS LONDON–BAHRAIN–KUALA LUMPUR ROUTE WITH NEW DAILY SERVICES

AirAsia X is set to launch new long-haul routes connecting Kuala Lumpur, Bahrain, and London Gatwick later this year, marking a further expansion of the low-cost carrier’s global network beyond Asia.
The airline, a long-haul subsidiary of the broader AirAsia group, had originally planned to begin operations recently but has since postponed its inaugural flights until at least August due to ongoing regional conflicts and market volatility. The carrier said affected passengers will be offered refunds or the option to reschedule their bookings.
When launched, the daily service will operate between Kuala Lumpur and Bahrain, with onward connections to London Gatwick. Flight timings include evening departures from Kuala Lumpur and Bahrain, while the London-to-Kuala Lumpur sector is also expected to operate daily with morning departures from the UK.
AirAsia X said Bahrain remains a key part of its long-term network strategy, with the airline aiming to strengthen connectivity between Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe once conditions stabilise.
London Gatwick welcomed the planned route, noting that the new service would enhance travel options for leisure and business passengers, as well as British–Malaysian travellers visiting friends and relatives.
Despite the delay, the UK has recently eased travel advice for Bahrain, improving travel accessibility for visitors with valid insurance.
The airline, meanwhile, continues to target a launch window in the coming months, depending on operating conditions.

MALAYSIA EXPANDS AIR LINKS WITH CHINA AND INDONESIA THROUGH NEW ROUTES

Malaysia has recently strengthened its international air connectivity with China and Indonesia following the launch of four new routes by Hainan Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Wings Air, and AirAsia, according to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).
The new services connect Kuala Lumpur with Chongqing and Dalian via Nanjing in China, as well as Melaka with Pekanbaru in Indonesia and Kota Bharu with Jakarta, further widening travel options between Malaysia and two key regional markets.
MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the expansion reflects steady growth across the aviation sector, noting that both major hubs and regional airports are benefiting from increased international links.
He said Kuala Lumpur International Airport continues to grow its network with major global markets, while airports in Melaka and Kota Bharu are also gaining stronger cross-border connectivity.
According to MAHB, Hainan Airlines recently launched flights between Chongqing and KLIA, followed by China Eastern Airlines introducing services from Dalian via Nanjing. In the regional network, Wings Air has begun thrice-weekly flights between Pekanbaru and Melaka Airport, while AirAsia has launched four-weekly services connecting Jakarta with Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Kelantan.
With these additions, MAHB now hosts 15 China-based airlines, reinforcing Malaysia’s position as a growing aviation hub in the region.
The new routes also mark important milestones for Melaka and Kota Bharu airports, each now operating international services that are expected to support tourism growth, business travel, and stronger economic links with neighbouring markets.

AIR ASTANA REVIVES KUALA LUMPUR INTEREST AS GLOBAL NETWORK EXPANDS

Air Astana has recently reaffirmed its interest in resuming flights to Kuala Lumpur as Kazakhstan’s national carrier continues to evaluate new international destinations amid broader network expansion.
Group chief executive officer Ibrahim Canliel said Kuala Lumpur remains a city the airline would like to serve again, although it currently ranks lower in priority due to operational and commercial considerations.
He noted that Kuala Lumpur sits outside the range of the airline’s narrowbody aircraft, requiring widebody operations, of which Air Astana has limited capacity. Longer flight times and stronger near-term profitability on other routes have also influenced the carrier’s current focus.
Air Astana first launched direct Almaty–Kuala Lumpur services in 2009, operating the route for more than a decade before suspending it in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Despite this, Canliel said medium-haul markets, particularly China, have been performing strongly, alongside renewed activity in Gulf routes. The airline has recently expanded its China network with new services from Astana to Guangzhou and from Almaty to Shanghai, in addition to existing routes to Beijing, Sanya, Urumqi and Yining.
The carrier has also resumed operations to Dubai, with flights restarting from both Almaty and Astana, initially operating via Pakistan due to airspace restrictions, with frequencies gradually increasing.
Air Astana is also benefiting from rising transit traffic through Kazakhstan, with international transit passengers showing strong year-on-year growth in early 2026. This has been supported by expanded connectivity across Asia, Europe, and Central Asia, with cities such as Seoul, Bangkok, Phuket, Istanbul, Delhi, and Tashkent among key transfer points.
Canliel said Kazakhstan is increasingly positioned as a transit hub between East and West, with both point-to-point and connecting traffic growing steadily. He also noted increasing inbound interest in Kazakhstan as a destination, alongside onward travel to neighbouring countries such as Georgia and Uzbekistan.
Looking ahead, Air Astana plans to introduce up to 15 new routes this year, supported by fleet expansion, including incoming Boeing 787 aircraft deliveries. The airline is also exploring potential services to the United States, although regulatory and operational requirements remain key considerations before such routes can be launched.
