An intimate private dining venue, exceptional hospitality, inspired wine pairings, and Chef Pennapra Yathai’s award-winning modern Thai cuisine combined to create a memorable debut in Kuala Lumpur, leaving guests hoping it won’t be the last.
Most wine dinners are enjoyable, but others linger in the memory long after the final glass has been emptied.
Pennapra Private Dining’s Kuala Lumpur debut was unquestionably the latter.
Presented by TEG Media in partnership with Spanish Cellar, the one-night-only wine pairing dinner introduced the acclaimed Penang private dining destination to a sold-out Kuala Lumpur audience, delivering an evening that combined authentic Thai cuisine, thoughtfully chosen Spanish wines, and one of the city’s most remarkable private dining venues.

While Chef Pennapra Yathai’s food deservedly took centre stage throughout the evening, the setting proved to be one of the night’s biggest revelations.
Hidden away from the bustle of the city, the beautifully appointed private dining residence provided an atmosphere unlike any conventional restaurant could offer. Elegant without being pretentious, intimate yet spacious, it immediately put guests at ease and encouraged the sort of relaxed conversation that makes wine dinners so enjoyable. The warmth of the space perfectly complemented Chef Pennapra’s own style of hospitality, creating an experience that felt more like being welcomed into someone’s home than attending a formal culinary event.
Special thanks are due to the generous owners of this remarkable property, whose willingness to open their beautiful private space made Pennapra’s first Kuala Lumpur appearance possible. It proved to be a genuinely inspired setting, and one that elevated an already exceptional evening into something genuinely memorable.
Chef Pennapra, recipient of the prestigious Thai Select 2-Star recognition from the Royal Thai Government, has built an enviable reputation in Penang over the past three years by combining authentic family recipes from Northern Thailand with refined modern techniques and premium ingredients. Her philosophy remains refreshingly simple: cook with heart, care, and attention to detail.

Guests found that philosophy to be deliciously evident in every course!
The evening began with a vibrant Prawn and Mango Salad dressed in a bright Thai vinaigrette, its sweet, tangy freshness pairing effortlessly with a lovely El Abuelo sparkling wine. Crisp citrus, green apple, delicate floral notes, and lively bubbles provided an energetic opening to the meal, cleansing the palate while complementing the natural sweetness of the prawns and mango beautifully.
The second course showcased Chef Pennapra’s interpretation of Tom Yum Seafood Bouillabaisse, a signature dish that captured the aromatic complexity of Thailand’s iconic soup while adding an elegant and thoughtful presentation calling to mind that classic French seafood dish. For the wine pairing, Casal Caeiro Albariño proved an inspired partner, its citrus-driven acidity, subtle minerality, and floral aromatics standing comfortably alongside the soup’s vibrant interplay of spice, seafood, and fragrant herbs.

If the opening dishes highlighted freshness and finesse, the third and fourth courses demonstrated balance.
A MASTERCLASS IN BALANCE
Perfectly grilled and supremely fresh squid, accompanied by Nam Jim Seafood sauce and Chef Pennapra’s deeply savoury umami sauce, delivered a contrasting blend of flavours that never overwhelmed one another. Laderas de Romeo Rosé wine, meanwhile, with its lively berry fruit and crisp finish, brought both refreshment and enough character to hold its own against one of Thailand’s boldest seafood accompaniments. It’s easy to think of France’s famed Provence region as the world leader when it comes to rosé wines, but in actual fact, Spain holds its own in this category very admirably. While France as a whole accounts for about 30% of the world’s rosé production, Spain is no slouch at 21%, and their embrace of this style of wine really came through with the Laderas de Romeo.

The evening reached what was perhaps its savoury crescendo with a beautifully prepared Angus striploin served alongside a standout, aromatic Panaeng curry. The earliest known recipe for this particular curry appeared in Tamra Kap Khao (ต้มรากับข้าว), a legendary cookbook published in 1890 by Maawm Sohm Jeen. She was a prominent culinary figure in the court of King Rama V, so it’s not inaccurate to say that Panaeng curry has a rather royal lineage!
Rich, fragrant, and deeply satisfying, the curry showcased exactly why this classic occupies such an important place in Thai cuisine. Rather than overpowering the beef, the spices enhanced it, while in the wine glass, a very nice Kaori Tinto Rioja contributed ripe black fruit, gentle spice, and soft tannins that tied the entire dish together with remarkable harmony.

Dessert completed the experience on a lighter note.
The Cha Yen Panna Cotta, finished with coconut milk foam, captured the unmistakable flavours of Thailand’s beloved milk tea in an elegant, creamy finale. The wine pairing was a stunner, too, with a Pámpano Semi-Sweet Verdejo offering just enough sweetness to mirror the dessert while retaining sufficient acidity and punch to keep the pairing fresh and beautifully balanced. As a special “off menu” treat, guests also enjoyed a magnificent Los Amigos Pedro Ximénez sherry to wrap up the meal, a sweet fortified wine that was enthusiastically received.
Throughout the evening, the wine selections from Spanish Cellar demonstrated that successful pairings aren’t always about matching weight or intensity. Instead, they highlighted acidity, freshness, texture, and complementary flavours, allowing both the wines and the cuisine to shine equally. We left feeling that Spanish wines are a very underrated companion for not only Thai dishes, but for other well-known cuisines in Southeast Asia, as well.

A DEBUT WORTH CELEBRATING
Perhaps the greatest compliment one could pay the evening is that it never felt like a clumsy first attempt in a new city in an unfamiliar kitchen and a different routine. The entire culinary team adapted beautifully.
Everything, from the seamless service and relaxed atmosphere to the pacing of the meal and the thoughtful wine pairings, reflected a team working in complete harmony. Guests were able to interact with the Pennapra Private Dining team, learn more about the inspiration behind each dish, and enjoy an experience that was both educational and immensely enjoyable. There may have been some stress and high-intensity moments, along with shopping for ingredients in unfamiliar markets, but if there were any concerns, they were concealed masterfully behind the scenes. Guests saw only the professional, hospitable execution of a lovely wine-paired meal.

Kuala Lumpur has no shortage of excellent restaurants, but evenings like this remind us that memorable dining is about much more than outstanding food alone. It’s about storytelling, hospitality, thoughtful wine service, and creating an environment where every guest feels part of something genuinely special.
We think Pennapra’s debut achieved all of that.
For those fortunate enough to have secured a seat, it was a memorable introduction to one of Penang’s finest culinary talents. Judging by the enthusiastic response throughout the evening, it hopefully won’t be the last time Chef Pennapra brings her distinctive style of modern Thai cuisine to the Malaysian capital –and we don’t think it will be. Stay tuned… and stay hungry!
