Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS enters the final stretch of its 2026 season with Tchaikovsky, Dvořák, Malaysian jazz, contemporary dance, Baroque favorites, and a family-friendly Vivaldi adventure.
Starting August 22, Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) brings together a particularly varied run of performances, moving from the emotional grandeur of Tchaikovsky to Dvořák’s cello concerto, a celebration of Malaysian jazz, contemporary dance, Baroque wit, and an imaginative introduction to Vivaldi for younger audiences.
The season resumes on Saturday, August 22, with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) returning to Tchaikovsky for an evening centered on the composer’s powerful Symphony No. 6, Pathétique. Junichi Hirokami will take the podium, while young German-Spanish-Malaysian violinist Elias David Moncado joins the orchestra for a violin concerto described as showcasing the lyrical beauty of the instrument.

The following weekend, on August 29, Hirokami returns for A Knight’s Tale: Valor And Romance In Music. The program features Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor, performed by Colombian cellist Santiago Cañón-Valencia, who has been praised by The Violin Channel as “a virtuoso of outstanding versatility.” Walton’s poignant Touch Her Soft Lips And Part, from the 1944 film Henry V, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 complete an evening built around romance, drama, and classical grandeur.

MUSIC, HERITAGE AND CONTEMPORARY DANCE
September begins with a celebration of one of Malaysia’s most important jazz figures. On Wednesday, September 2, the MPO pays tribute to pianist, arranger, and conductor Alfonso Soliano, whose work helped shape the country’s jazz landscape. Led by conductor Ahmad Muriz Che Rose, The Solianos will feature as vocalists and instrumentalists in a program celebrating Soliano’s legacy and contribution to Malaysian music.

Two days later, DFP shifts from jazz to contemporary dance with Yin & Yang: A Dance Kaleidoscope. The double bill, presented by ASK Dance Company and Dua Space Dance Theatre on Saturday, September 5, explores two very different themes. Hang Li Po reimagines the story of the legendary Chinese princess, while Passage Into The Unknown: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind offers a poetic reflection on humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

Baroque music takes center stage on September 12, when conductor and recorder player Maurice Steger leads the MPO in a program featuring works by Telemann and Vivaldi. The concert promises a lighter, more playful side of the Baroque era, with Steger bringing his particular expertise as both performer and conductor to the DFP stage.

Families get their own afternoon of music the following weekend. On Saturday, September 19, Gerard Salonga returns to lead the MPO in Vivaldi’s Ring Of Mystery. Presented with Classical Kids Live!, the one-hour theatrical symphonic concert is designed to introduce children and families to the life and music of Antonio Vivaldi in an accessible and entertaining format.

With tickets ranging from RM69 to RM499, the upcoming DFP program offers plenty of variety, whether the preference is for a major orchestral work, Malaysian cultural heritage, contemporary dance, Baroque music, or an afternoon designed to introduce younger listeners to classical music.
