Fresh off being named the World’s Most Admired Whiskey for a third consecutive year, Michter’s recently arrived in Kuala Lumpur with an impressive lineup of special releases that reminded local enthusiasts exactly why the Kentucky distillery has become such a respected name in the global whiskey world.
American whiskey has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past two decades. Once dismissed in some circles as a rougher counterpart to Scotch whisky, premium bourbon and rye have steadily earned their place among the world’s most sought-after spirits. Few producers embody that evolution quite like Michter’s.
Recently crowned the World’s Most Admired Whiskey by Drinks International for the third consecutive year, the Kentucky-based producer recently brought a selection of its most coveted expressions to Kuala Lumpur for an exclusive tasting event held at Frank’s Bar on April 27.
The intimate showcase gathered members of the media, bartenders, and hospitality industry professionals for an evening that highlighted not only Michter’s core range, but also a series of highly regarded limited releases that have become increasingly difficult to find globally.
Hosted by Michter’s Director of International Hospitality Coverage and Asia Pacific Sales Director Ethan Chai, and supported locally by Wholly Spirits, the tasting offered attendees a rare opportunity to explore the depth and versatility of the acclaimed American whiskey house.

Among the standout pours for us were the 2025 editions of Bomberger’s Declaration and Shenk’s Homestead, both of which pay tribute to historical names connected to Michter’s long lineage. These were joined by the exceptional Michter’s 10 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon and Michter’s 10 Year Kentucky Straight Rye, two age-stated expressions that have become favourites among collectors and serious whiskey drinkers alike.
Also particularly memorable was the Michter’s US★1 Barrel Strength Rye, which delivered an impressively rich and spicy profile without sacrificing balance. Meanwhile, the Michter’s US★1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon demonstrated precisely why toasted barrel finishes have become so popular among modern bourbon enthusiasts, layering caramelized sweetness, oak spice, vanilla, and gentle smoke into an approachable dram.
The full US★1 core range was also available throughout the evening, including Michter’s flagship Straight Bourbon, Straight Rye, Unblended American Whiskey, and Sour Mash Whiskey.

What makes Michter’s particularly interesting in today’s whiskey landscape is its refusal to chase volume at the expense of quality, an approach we’d like to see a few other big-name distilleries embrace. The Louisville distillery has become known for what it openly describes as a “cost-be-damned” production philosophy, sparing little expense in pursuit of consistency, quality, and flavour.
That attention to detail extends across virtually every stage of production – from the selection and air-drying of barrel staves to the toasting and charring process, lower barrel entry proof, warehouse heat cycling, maturation monitoring, and filtration methods.
For whiskey enthusiasts, these details result in a lovely dram. American whiskey may appear straightforward on the surface, but subtle production choices dramatically influence the final spirit in the glass. Increasingly, the pros working in KL’s cocktail bars are embracing that complexity, too.

At the Kuala Lumpur event, Ngie Kok Kiong and the team from Frank’s Bar showcased Michter’s versatility in classic whiskey cocktails, including an expertly prepared Old Fashioned that embraced both bourbon and rye, and a very interesting twist on the classic Manhattan. These excellent cocktails served as an effective reminder that premium American whiskey does not need to be confined solely to neat pours or contemplative sipping sessions.
In fact, many of the world’s leading cocktail bars now rely heavily on high-quality bourbon and rye to elevate classic drinks, particularly as cocktail culture across Asia continues to mature.
That trend was further reflected during the recent Kuala Lumpur Cocktail Week 2026, where Michter’s featured prominently as one of the event’s sponsors.
Throughout the week-long celebration, the brand participated in several high-profile guest shifts and collaborative events involving internationally acclaimed bars, including Virtu, Hope & Sesame, Montana, Punch Room, Bar Trigona, and Three X Co.

It is hard not to notice how dramatically perceptions surrounding American whiskey have shifted. Once viewed primarily through the lens of mass-market bourbon, the category today includes deeply nuanced, carefully crafted spirits capable of standing comfortably alongside premium Scotch, Japanese whisky, or fine Cognac.
It’s safe to say that Michter’s has played a meaningful role in that rise.
Its growing reputation among bartenders and enthusiasts stems not from aggressive marketing or celebrity endorsements, but rather from a consistently strong portfolio that rarely disappoints. The distillery’s older releases, especially the 10 Year expressions and limited annual bottlings, have become increasingly allocated globally as demand continues to surge.
For Malaysian whiskey lovers, events like this provide a welcome opportunity to explore bottles that can otherwise be frustratingly elusive, especially on this side of the world, far away from the whiskey’s Kentucky home.
We have to say, though, judging by the reception at Frank’s Bar, the appetite for thoughtfully crafted American whiskey in Malaysia continues to grow quite nicely indeed. We were delighted to see the new line-up of special releases available here, and for those who are keen to explore the Michter’s range, you can visit Wholly Spirits, or look for the Michter’s booth at WhiskyPLUS KL, scheduled to be held in mid-August.
