Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City climbs to 138th globally in Newsweek’s latest rankings, maintaining its position as Malaysia’s top hospital.
Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC) has once again been ranked the No. 1 hospital in Malaysia in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 list, reinforcing its standing as one of the country’s leading private healthcare institutions.
In the latest global rankings, SMC rose to 138th position worldwide, marking a significant climb from 193rd in 2025 and 233rd in 2024. The steady upward trajectory places the hospital among the world’s Top 250 institutions featured in the published global list.
Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long welcomed the recognition, saying, “We are honoured to be recognised in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 and proud to be ranked No. 1 in Malaysia once again.
“This achievement is a testament to the dedication of our doctors, nurses and colleagues across the organisation and the trust placed in us by patients and partners locally and internationally.”
He added, “We remain committed to strengthening clinical governance, advancing patient safety and experience and continuing to invest in capabilities that support consistent, high-quality care for the communities we serve.”
A GLOBAL BENCHMARK
The World’s Best Hospitals ranking is published annually by Newsweek in partnership with Statista, as part of a long-running collaboration to benchmark hospital performance and patient-centred outcomes internationally.
For the 2026 edition, more than 2,500 hospitals were evaluated from a global pool of over 200,000 healthcare institutions. These include public hospitals, teaching hospitals, university hospitals, and private facilities. Only the top 250 institutions worldwide are featured in the final published list.
The ranking places SMC alongside some of the most respected names in global healthcare, including Mayo Clinic – Rochester, Cleveland Clinic, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, University Health Network – Toronto General Hospital, and Singapore General Hospital.
The inclusion reflects a broad global benchmark spanning major healthcare systems, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan.
RIGOROUS METHODOLOGY
The evaluation process draws on multiple data sources. These include peer recommendations from a global survey of more than 100,000 medical experts, patient experience data, and a range of hospital quality metrics.
Also incorporated is Statista’s Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) survey, which assesses how effectively hospitals measure and improve outcomes based on direct patient feedback. The methodology aims to balance professional assessment with measurable clinical performance and patient perspectives.
For Sunway Medical Centre, the latest ranking signals sustained performance rather than a one-off result. Its upward movement over three consecutive years suggests consistent gains in reputation, governance, and patient care standards.
As Malaysia’s healthcare landscape continues to evolve – particularly in the areas of medical tourism, specialist services, and tertiary care – global benchmarks such as this offer both recognition and accountability. For SMC, maintaining its top national position while rising internationally underscores a clear ambition: to compete not only at home, but on the world stage.
